Dark Star Orchestra – “Scarlet Begonias”

Thankfully, the “Polar Vortex” left us. Now that we’re back to “regular winter,” it’s time to go see some music. Last night we had Dark Star Orchestra at the Barrymore Theatre in Madison WI. DSO brings out the hippies and the smell of cannabis was in the air! There’s nothing quite like the way Deadhead chicks dance. Makes for a fun night! Here’s “Scarlet Begonias” from a show last July.

Jackson Browne with Crosby, Stills & Nash – “The Pretender”

I saw and got to meet Jackson Browne last June at Steel Bridge Songfest in Sturgeon Bay WI. Jackson is part-owner of the Holiday Music Motel in Sturgeon Bay. For a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer he’s a pretty down-to-earth guy. And unlike many performers, his voice is still the same. When he did “Doctor My Eyes” I closed my eyes and went back 40 years!! Here’s one from a couple years ago with Crosby, Stills & Nash at Madison Square Garden.

Pete Seeger on “The Johnny Cash Show”

I’d be remiss if I didn’t take a moment to pay tribute to Folk music and civil rights icon Pete Seeger who passed away Monday at the age of 94. You’ll probably see a lot of replays of Pete with Bruce Springsteen at President Obama’s Inauguration. I picked out this clip of Pete with “The Man in Black” on Johnny’s TV show in 1970. This is classic – Enjoy!

Miss Meaghan Owens – Live

I featured Geri X last week. BTW – She made her goal on Kickstarter. But it occurred to me that I haven’t been featuring enough women artists so I’m going to try to correct that.

I’ve seen Miss Meghan Owens perform twice. She writes some terrific songs. Anyone I’ve recommended her to hasn’t been disappointed. Here’s a live show she did last year. Hope you like it. For more of Meaghan’s music go to http://www.missmeaghanowens.com/

2014 NEA Jazz Masters: Richard Davis

Today, I pay tribute to 2014 National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master, Richard Davis. I’m proud to say that I know Richard, who is generally considered to be the most famous bass player in the world. This man has played with a Who’s Who of great artists: Sarah Vaughan, Miles Davis, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Janis Ian, Van Morrison and Bruce Springsteen, just to name a few. For the last 40 years, he has also been a music professor at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. We’re having a little party next week to celebrate Richard’s award. Can’t wait to hear more of his stories! Congratulations Richard!! For more go to his website http://richarddavis.org/
