Gov’t Mule played on Saturday night at the Orpheum Theater in Madison WI. If you don’t know Gov’t Mule, you should. Gov’t Mule features Warren Haynes, who’s played with everyone from the Allman Brothers to the Dead to the Dave Matthews Band – the list goes on. Their original material is great but I love Gov’t Mule most for the terrific covers that they do. On this tour, Jackie Greene joins the band and the entire second set is a Neil Young tribute. It’s fantastic – “Cinnamon Girl” to “Rockin In The Free World” and everything in between! This video is from just last Friday and will give you a taste. I got an email from a college buddy telling me about a great Blues song he just heard, “Champagne and Reefer.” I couldn’t believe that in 60+ years, he’d never heard that Muddy Waters classic! I passed 3 states’ bar exams and after every one my friends and I celebrated with champagne and reefer – except the time we had hash. This is Muddy Waters with the Rolling Stones doing “Champagne and Reefer” from that famous night at the Checkerboard Lounge in Chicago in 1981. I’m not going to tell you I was there but I was living in Chicago and out that night and drove past the Checkerboard Lounge. Believe me, I was pissed the next day when I found out what I missed!
The Dirty Heads played last Saturday night at the Barrymore Theatre in Madison WI for a sold out show. I hadn’t checked out their music before the show so I didn’t know what to expect. These guys are super-popular and draw a 20-something crowd with plenty of women in short skirts! Plus, they drank heavy and not beer – booze – and keep the doubles coming! Fun crowd, late night and thanks for tipping your bartenders! This is the video for “My Sweet Summer” from the Dirty Heads latest album, “Sound of Change.”
Widespread Panic was in Milwaukee WI last weekend for their annual 3 shows at the Riverside Theater. I didn’t go this year but I know plenty of people who were there for all 3 shows. For my friends who never get enough here’s a Widespread Panic set from last month.
Trampled By Turtles plays tonight at Overture Hall in Madison WI. They’ll be featuring their latest album, Wild Animals, which was released on July 15. This will be my second time seeing them. They have a very loyal, almost jam band-like fan base which is not used to seeing them in a beautiful venue like Overture Hall. It’s always fun watching how the hippies react to being out of their element in such a nice place. Here’s a well-produced half hour live set from last year.
One of the highlights for me from La Fete de Marquette was Raw Oyster Cult. This is a band I’d heard a lot of raving about but had yet to see. The raves were worth it – they were fantastic! Raw Oyster Cult includes former members of the Radiators, including Dave Malone and Jon Gros of Papa Grows Funk. If you ever get a chance, don’t miss them. This song was my favorite. Good advice too!
This year, La Fete de Marquette moved to a new location – the new Central Park in Madison WI. Last Thursday, after a grand opening program for the new park, we were treated to some terrific music from the Honey Island Swamp Band. Those of us who haven’t been to New Orleans for some years hadn’t seen them and were blown away! Here’s a taste from their set at the New Orleans Jazz Fest this past April.
