It wouldn’t be summer in Madison WI without a visit from one of our favorites, long, tall Marcia Ball! Marcia and her band closed out La Fete de Marquette last Sunday night with a rousing 90 minute set! It was the perfect end to a fantastic festival! Hard to believe we’re halfway through the season already! Here’s Marcia Ball with her band and some other friends.
One of the highlights for me from La Fete de Marquette was Raw Oyster Cult. This is a band I’d heard a lot of raving about but had yet to see. The raves were worth it – they were fantastic! Raw Oyster Cult includes former members of the Radiators, including Dave Malone and Jon Gros of Papa Grows Funk. If you ever get a chance, don’t miss them. This song was my favorite. Good advice too!
Happy Bastille Day! We had our celebration in Madison WI last weekend with our La Fete de Marquette – 4 days of music, culture, food and of course, wine and beer! Saturday was Le Jour de Louisiane (Louisiana Day). One of the highlights was Nathan Williams & the Zydeco Cha-Chas. This video will give you a taste of what we experienced. More to come!
My apologies to those who look forward to my posts. Your host on Madison Area Blues & More has been busy – 2 days binging at Summerfest in Milwaukee and then the 4th of July weekend! But I saw a lot of music which I’ll be sharing now that things have quieted a little. On Sunday night, in a warm-up for La Fete de Marquette which happens this weekend, Feufollet performed at the Crystal Corner Bar in Madison WI. It was a great show! And I want to offer my thanks to my beautiful friend Billie who put up with my drunken attempts at the Two-Step!
Copper Box performing Marcia Ball’s “That’s Enough Of That Stuff.” Copper Box is another great band who performed at this year’s Steel Bridge Songfest. Copper Box features a couple of talented multi-instrumentalists with Michelle up front on sax and vocals. A great part about Steel Bridge is that a lot of the performers book gigs around Wisconsin on their way home after playing the festival in Sturgeon Bay – and we get to see them again!
Jeffery Broussard & the Creole Cowboys performing “Creole Medley.” Jeffery Broussard & the Creole Cowboys were in Madison WI last Saturday night officially opening the summer music season at the UW Memorial Union Terrace. It was a beautiful night at “The Terrace” with all the boats on the lake behind the stage! And Jeffery’s accordion playing Creole and Zydeco – “Don’t call it Cajun music, he says.” – was a fitting kickoff for what we hope will be a warm summer with lots of hot music! Here’s a little taste for those who couldn’t make the show.
Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys performing “Zydeco Sont Pas Sale” from their 25th Anniversary Show in Layfayette LA. I’m finding that I get the most hits and biggest response on this blog when I put up a Zydeco post! It was just announced that Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys will be coming back to Madison WI for La Fete de Marquette in July. I saw them last year and they put on a terrific show! Enjoy everybody!
