James Lee Stanley played a very well received set last night at the Barrymore Theatre in Madison WI opening for a certain rock icon whom I’ll be featuring tomorrow. He’s a guy who likes to talk and joke with the crowd and he made a lot of fans last night. I should know – I was mistaken for James Lee Stanley a couple times and was told how awesome my set was! “Goin’ Back To Memphis” is a song he wrote thinking about one of the best barbeque places in America, The Rendezvous in Memphis TN. If you haven’t been there, go there!
The Jimmys are one of Madison WI’s favorite bands. Led by keyboardist extraordinaire Jimmy Voegeli, The Jimmys powerfully blend rock, soul, and swing into a fun and energetic show. The Jimmys toured through much of the Midwest during the summer music festival season. This video is from a Mad Toast Live! show I attended last year. Check it out and see why we love The Jimmys!
Happy Birthday to Sting who turns 63 today! I’ve seen him 3 times over the years – once in the early ’90s opening for the Grateful Dead at Soldier Field in Chicago! THAT was a crazy show! Today’s video is from his 60th Birthday Concert in New York City. Once you get to the music it’s quite good. And yes, that’s Stevie Wonder playing with Sting.
Justin Townes Earle played at the Barrymore Theatre in Madison WI last Wednesday. It was another great show during a busy week of fantastic music! This was the 3rd time I’ve seen Justin Townes Earle at the Barrymore and he likes to let his fans in by telling the stories behind his songs. “Time Shows Fools” is from Justin Townes Earle’s recent release, “Single Mothers” and he played several songs from the album which is dedicated to his mother. He even covered Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” just because his mom likes the song!
Bryan Ferry played the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee WI on Tuesday night. It was a great show in a terrific venue! Bryan Ferry fans were treated to a little bit of everything, including several Roxy Music songs. (Someday, I’m going to post “Love Is The Drug” just because I’ve always liked it!) Anyway, here’s a cover I never thought I’d see Bryan Ferry do, “Let’s Stick Together” from a few months ago.
A great night for Blues last night at Badger Bowl in Madison WI! Many great artists showed up to support keyboardist, Ken Saydak, who has been fighting cancer. The good news – Ken is currently cancer-free so we had that to celebrate! There were many highlights and I’ll be featuring other artists who were there in future posts. Today it’s the Alex Wilson Band. This set is from earlier this year at a club in Memphis. Enjoy!
Much fun this past weekend! I finally got back to Sturgeon Bay WI in beautiful Door County for some golf, great food, drinking and of course, music! We met up with pat mAcdonald and melaniejane from Purgatory Hill a couple nights for some revelry. Exciting news that they’ve purchased the building next door to the Holiday Music Motel and named it the Tambourine. It will become a recording and performance space as well as a sanctuary for artists. Here’s one of my favorites from Purgatory Hill. And pat is correct – it’s either drinking or driving in Sturgeon Bay – the cops are everywhere!
